List of stellar records:part 2
Graphic: Nasa
Biggest explosion: SGR 1806-20
A magnetar is a neutron star with an extremely strong magnetic field. This one has 1000 trillion gauss (Earth has only 0.5 gauss).
On December 27th 2004 the crust of the magnetar broke for a short moment. This caused a heavy gamma-ray eruption. In the one tenth of a second the eruption lasted the star emitted so much energy as the Sun in 150 000 years. It was the biggest explosion discovered so far.
SGR 1806-20 is a neighbor of LBV 1806-20.
Constellation: Sagittarius
Distance: 49 000 light-years
Mass: 1.44 - 3.2 * Sun
Diameter: 24 Kilometer
